Buying a Used Car in Doral? Get It Inspected First (Seriously)

That "Great Deal" Might Cost You More Than You Think

We've all been there. You find a used car online that looks perfect — the right year, the right mileage, and a price that seems almost too good. The seller says it runs great, the photos look clean, and you're ready to hand over the money.

But here's the thing: a car can look great on the outside and be hiding some seriously expensive problems underneath. We see it more often than you'd think.

Last month, a customer brought in a 2019 sedan they were about to buy from a private seller. Everything looked good during the test drive. But when we put it on the lift, we found worn ball joints, a leaking transmission seal, and brake rotors that were past their limit. The repair bill would've been close to $2,500 — and the seller wasn't going to tell them any of that.

They walked away from the deal and ended up finding a much better car the following week.

What We Actually Check

A pre-purchase inspection isn't just a quick look under the hood. We go through the car systematically, the same way we'd inspect it if it belonged to our own family. Here's what we cover:

Engine and transmission. We check for leaks, unusual noises, fluid condition, and how the engine performs under load. A test drive is part of the process.

Brakes and suspension. We measure pad thickness, inspect rotors, check all suspension components for wear, and test the steering system.

Electrical system. Lights, battery health, alternator output, and a scan for any stored diagnostic trouble codes. Sometimes a seller will clear the codes right before selling — we can often tell.

Undercarriage and frame. This is where rust, accident damage, and fluid leaks show up. Florida cars don't usually have rust issues, but flood damage is a real concern — especially with how many cars come from out of state.

Tires and alignment. Uneven tire wear tells us a lot about how the car has been driven and maintained.

Fluids. Engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid — their condition tells a story about how well the car has been taken care of.

"But the Seller Already Has a Carfax"

A vehicle history report is a good starting point, but it only shows what's been reported. Not every repair goes through insurance. Not every accident gets documented. And a Carfax can't tell you that the timing belt is overdue or that the A/C compressor is about to give out.

There's no substitute for having a mechanic physically look at the car.

How Much Does It Cost?

A pre-purchase inspection at our shop is one of the most affordable services we offer — and it's easily the one with the highest return on investment. Think of it this way: spending a little now to avoid spending thousands later is just smart math.

If the car checks out, great — you buy with confidence. If it doesn't, you just saved yourself from a money pit. Either way, you win.

A Few Tips for Used Car Shopping in South Florida

  • Check for flood damage. Look for water stains in the trunk, musty smells, and mismatched upholstery. Florida gets hurricanes — and some flood cars end up right back on the market.

  • Don't skip the test drive. And not just around the block. Get on the highway, try hard braking, and listen for any strange sounds.

  • If a seller won't let you get it inspected, walk away. That's the biggest red flag there is.

  • Bring a friend who knows cars — or better yet, bring it to a shop you trust.
